The Illinois Republican Party recently released a new digital ad accusing House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) and Democratic gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker of seeking additional tax increases, a GOP release said.
“A 32 percent tax hike isn’t enough for Pritzker and Madigan, they’re coming back for more,” the ad voiceover says. “Stop Pritzker and Madigan. We’ve had enough tax hikes.”
The ad points to a recent interview Prtizker, the billionaire heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, gave to Crain’s Chicago Business.
J.B. Pritzker
“Illinois may need another tax hike to balance the books and pay for needed public investments, even if the progressive income tax eventually comes about,” Crain’s Chicago Business’ Greg Hinz wrote. “That was the fiscal bottom line from Democratic gubernatorial hopeful J.B. Pritzker.”
The GOP release also points to a recorded response from Madigan after he was asked whether his plan is “just for tax increases.” The GOP accuses Madigan, who laughs at the question, of dodging the question.
The ad also includes footage of Pritzker arguing that Illinois residents aren’t leaving the state due to their tax burdens.
