Terry Nguyen Le, a candidate for House District 13, emphasized the importance of lowering property taxes and streamlining regulations to alleviate economic pressures on families and small businesses while fostering growth. He made this statement during an interview.

"I see the most pressing issue facing Illinois' 13th District as the high cost of living driven by excessive taxation and economic stagnation," said Nguyen Le. "Residents are burdened by some of the nation's highest property taxes, which strain families and small businesses, forcing many to leave the state. Addressing this requires immediate tax relief, particularly for small businesses, through reduced property tax rates and streamlined regulations to spur entrepreneurship. By fostering a business-friendly environment and cutting wasteful government spending, we can alleviate financial pressures, create jobs, and make the district a place where families and businesses can thrive."

Chicago, including Illinois House District 13, is grappling with above-average cost of living challenges, primarily driven by housing costs that are approximately 40% higher than the national average. According to RentCafe, overall living expenses in Chicago exceed the Illinois average by 5% and the U.S. average by 15%, with utilities being slightly lower. Housing, food, and transportation remain significant burdens for residents.

Illinois homeowners face some of the highest property taxes in the nation, with an effective rate of 1.83% in 2023. The Illinois Policy Institute reports that this rate surpasses the national average considerably, imposing a heavier burden on Illinois families compared to those in neighboring states and contributing to affordability concerns within the state.

The state continues to experience substantial population and business outmigration linked to high costs and taxes. The Illinois Policy Institute noted that in 2023 alone, Illinois lost 93,247 residents due to domestic migration and saw 218 businesses depart—nearly triple the pre-pandemic rate—underscoring long-term competitiveness challenges and economic pressures affecting residents and employers.

Nguyen Le is a Chicago-born son of Vietnamese war refugees and a U.S. Army veteran who represents a new generation of leadership rooted in service and determination. His diverse experience includes caregiving, small business management, manufacturing, restaurant management, casino operations, and extensive community volunteering. He is running for State Representative with goals to lower taxes, reduce wasteful spending, enhance public safety, and expand school choice—particularly for working-class and low-income families. He advocates for pension reforms and transparency measures aimed at stabilizing Illinois’ finances, promoting job growth, and restoring trust in government.

The Illinois House of Representatives was established by the state's 1818 Constitution as the lower chamber of the General Assembly. It comprises 118 members serving two-year terms without limits. According to the official State of Illinois website, this chamber collaborates with the Senate and governor to enact laws and budgets. House District 13 represents Chicago’s North Side communities through one elected member.
