Candidate slams Rep. Schneider for not calling for Conyers' resignation

Republican congressional candidate Jeremy Wynes, who is running to represent the 11th District, has criticized the incumbent Democrat, Rep. Brad Schneider, for standing by embattled Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), who faces sexual harassment allegations.

“Brad Schneider ought to be ashamed of himself,” Wynes said in a statement. “Sexual harassment should be condemned regardless of party affiliation. John Conyers has no business being in Congress. It’s disgusting to see Brad Schneider playing politics with this issue.”

Wynes was referring to a recent Crain’s Chicago Business report indicating that Schneider did not think Conyers should immediately resign.

In contrast, Wynes has called for Conyers' resignation.

“Schneider — who held his seat for one term, lost it in 2014 and regained it in 2016 — says Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., may eventually have to give up his seat," the Crain's report said. "But not yet,”

Schneider said further action against Conyers should await the conclusion of an ethics investigation.

“Asked how that's different than the situation involving Alabama GOP Senate hopeful Roy Moore ... Schneider said Moore faces ‘a number of allegations’ over some years, often involving teenagers,” the Crain's report said.

Schneider initially said there was only one person accusing Conyers of sexual misconduct, according to Crain's. But there are now three accusers, according to a report from Politico.
