Rice calling for congressional committee to tackle Illinois corruption

Vote13

Max Rice is pushing for a congressional committee to combat the rampant corruption he sees as the primary reason why rising taxes are seemingly outpacing everything else in Illinois government.

Federal statistics show that from 2008 to 2015, average property taxes across the state grew at a rate more than six times faster than household incomes. Making the situation all the more difficult to process, researchers noted those hikes have come at a time when investment in home equity prices has drastically declined.

“Property taxes are only high if you do not pay Madigan and Getzendanner's flat fee,” Rice told Chicago City Wire, referring to House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) and the law firm of Madigan & Getzedanner where he is a partner. “And there are many more taxes plus fees that are too high or exist at all because of Illinois government corruption. A cap on Illinois' public official and administrator pensions at $100,000 dollars is also needed to combat rising taxes.”

As one of four candidates vying in the Republican primary for the right to take on Democratic incumbent U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Evanston in the 9th Congressional District, Rice is confident he can make a difference in the business-as-usual system of doing things.

“My opponent's net worth has at least multiplied five times by working in Congress,” he said. “And despite the fact that Jan Schakowsky is a socialist who is suing (President) Donald Trump to release his tax returns, she ... has not ever released her tax returns. Her priorities appear to be herself and her donors.”

Rice said that’s what makes him so sure career politicians like his opponent will never support congressional committees like the one he is advocating.

“Give Jan Schakowsky a thousand dollars and you could get a million-dollar grant,” he said. “Jan Schakowsky will never support a congressional committee on Illinois government corruption because she makes too much money off of it.”

The 9th Congressional district includes parts or all of north Cook County including parts of Evanston, Skokie and the North Side of Chicago.
