Community activist backing Laporte in bid to unseat Martwick

Vote

North Side community leader and Chicago Police Lt. John Garrido has endorsed colleague Jeffrey Laporte in his Democratic primary bid against state Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) in the 19th District.

“Please remember when our community asked state Rep. Martwick to stand with us against Alderman (John) Arena and his extreme density project at 5150 N. Northwest Highway, Martwick decided to remain silent and stand with Arena,” Garrido posted to Facebook. “Jeff has lived in our community for almost two decades with his wife of 16 years and their three children. So if you are pulling a Democrat ballot in this election, please consider Jeff.”

Garrido has also sought to remind voters that their vote counts, while hinting that he doesn’t think Laporte’s inexperience in the world of politics will serve as a hindrance to him.

“I have several friends running for office on both sides of the aisle and I will post their names over the next few days,” he added in his post.

Laporte, who holds a master’s degree in public safety from Lewis University, is running on a platform of fiscal responsibility and tax reform. He previously told reporters he thinks local government needs to operate much more efficiently.

"We need to show them (residents) they are not just ATMs for reckless politicians," he said. "We need to hold the line on any more tax increases, get Medicaid under control and eliminate pensions for elected officials," he told the Chicago Tribune in its editorial board questionnaires.
