City Rock issued the following announcement on May 17.
You can make it a rocking summer when you rock and roll your way to the Rock Island Public Library for reading challenges and events for all ages, June 1 to July 21 at all library locations. The library kicks off Libraries Rock summer reading challenges with a Rock into Summer party on Thursday, May 31, from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the Rock Island Downtown Library parking lot. The free event includes summer reading registration for all ages, fun prizes, and a rockin' concert by Riding Atlas. This trio of teens from Galena, Illinois and Davenport, Iowa, were brought together by their goal to rock the world! Riding Atlas plays from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Guests are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and listen.
With May 31 being the last full day of school in the Rock Island/Milan School District, the party is a great way to celebrate summer. The library will provide free water, popcorn, and treats, and Vibrant Credit Union will be handing out free ice cream from their mobile ice cream truck.
For guests who want a more substantial snack, Happy Joe's Pizza will sell pan pizza slices for $4. Scratch Cupcakery’s mobile cupcake truck, Scratch Curbside, will also be parked at the event. Twelve cupcake flavors will be available for sale at $2 per cake or $22 per dozen. Flavor choices, while supplies last, include Wedding Day, Oh Happy Day!, Raspberry Love, Root Beer Float, Peanut Butter Cup, Blackout, M&M, Black and White, Pieces, Red Velvet Cheesecake, Loaded S'mores, and Creme de Mint. Also available on the truck will be gluten-free bread from Outrageous Baking. The library receives a portion of cupcake sales made at the event.
The event is free and open to the public. Weather permitting, all activities will be in the Rock Island Library lot immediately to the east of the Library, (1930 4th Avenue.) Most activities move inside in the event of rain. All library locations will be open normal hours on May 31.
The band and other portions of the kickoff are funded by a grant from Modern Woodmen of America. The Summer Reading Challenge is funded by the library budget with additional support from the Rock Island Public Library Foundation.
About the band: Riding Atlas consists of the two Dicklin brothers, 18-year-old Nicholas on lead guitar and vocals and 16-year-old Joseph on bass, and their friend, 16-year-old Sam Petri on drums. Riding Atlas members played together at River Music Experience rock camps, and have since combined their talents to write and perform original alternative rock music. Nicholas was a semi-finalist in the International 2017 Wilson Center Guitar Festival, and the band made a big splash at the International Blues Challenge youth showcase in 2017 and 2018. Riding Atlas has a single “Through the Eyes of Another” available on iTunes and their first full album will be released later this year.
