Despite publicly denying her mayoral intentions, Susana Mendoza was nevertheless listed on petitions for the office, according to a Tweet from an NBC reporter.

Mary Ann Ahern of NBC 5 Chicago tweeted a copy of the petition on Oct. 13. The document listed Susana A. Mendoza as a candidate for the Feb. 26, 2019, mayoral election.

However, Mendoza, currently the Illinois comptroller, recently told the Chicago Sun-Times editorial board “I’m not lying to you when I tell you I’m not even close to making a decision on that.”

Travis Sterling

Travis Sterling, executive director of the Illinois Republican Party, said the apparent deception was nothing new for Mendoza.

“One principle has held true during Mendoza’s 17 years in public office — she has always put her own advancement first,” Sterling said in a press release. “Mendoza’s current deceptions and lies are obvious proof (that) points to her continuation of putting her own self-service ahead of public service.”
