Pat O'Connor out as alderman after 36 years

Challenger Andre Vasquez unseated 40th Ward Alderman Patrick O'Connor in Tuesday's election. 

With all 39 precincts reporting, Vasquez had 53.9 percent of the vote (7,269) to O'Connor's 46.1 percent (6,209), according to the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners.

O'Connor is a longtime alderman, having held the post for 36 years.  He serves as outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel's floor leader and is the chairman of the council's Finance Committee. 

Vasquez is a political newcomer who works for AT&T and is a former rapper. He won the endorsement of the Democratic Socialists of America.

The 40th Ward includes parts of Edgewater, Lincoln Square West Andersonville and West Ridge.

Voter turnout was extremely light Tuesday with only 495,328 ballots cast overall among 1,592,658 registered voters, according to the election board.
