ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 27: Slaughter Visits Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry

Food

Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on April 30.

State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, recently visited the Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry to discuss ongoing efforts to provide food to local families and individuals struggling with hunger.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to meet some of the dedicated men and women who are fighting food insecurity in our community,” Slaughter said. “We must work together to ensure that everyone, regardless of income or housing status, is free from hunger.”

Slaughter toured the Maple Morgan Park Food Pantry and helped volunteers stock food items. The food pantry, which serves the Morgan Park and Beverly neighborhoods, recently changed its distribution model to a client choice model that will replicate a grocery store experience by allowing families and individuals to choose what food they will take home.

“In addition to providing clients with food that they prefer, the client choice model will also reduce food waste as clients are less likely to waste food that they chose to take,” Slaughter said. “By allowing people to choose what food they take, the pantry succeeds in both feeding the hungriest in our community and empowering them.”
