Former state university employee Shaffer paid in $23K to pension fund, could collect $369K in retirement

Former state university employee Darnell Shaffer, who retired in July 2017, saved $22,601 toward a pension over 14 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Shaffer would collect as much as $369,318, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chicago City Wire.

The projection assumes Shaffer received $7,762 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 3 years of retirement, Shaffer will have already received $23,992 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
