Illinois State House District 40 issued the following announcement on Dec. 10.
In the midst of holiday shopping season, state Rep. Jaime Andrade, D-Chicago, is encouraging families to be mindful of purchasing toys that may be hazardous for young children and to familiarize themselves with product recalls.
“The holidays are a busy time spent enjoying the company of family and friends,” Andrade said. “I do not want anyone’s season complicated by the accidental purchase of dangerous toys, so I encourage everyone to review this year’s safe shopping guide to avoid any accidents.”
Andrade is encouraging parents to read through the current annual safe shopping guide. For over a decade, the attorney general has published a safe shopping guide that includes products that have been recalled due to safety hazards to help parents avoid dangerous purchases for children or remove those products they already own from their home. Caution should also be exercised when purchasing from second-hand sellers, as these toys may have been listed in previous editions of the toy safety guide.
“Families should keep in mind that toys that haven’t been recalled may still pose risks, such as having small, easy to swallow pieces, lead, or be flammable. I encourage everyone to be mindful of all these things when making purchases,” Andrade added. “Giving to others is a very fulfilling activity, and I want the community to enjoy a safe, happy holiday season.”
