City Colleges of Chicago enrollment down 25% in 5 years

College3

City Colleges of Chicago campuses saw their enrollment numbers drop by a total of 8,349 students between the years 2014 and 2018, according to data from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE).

The seven-campus community college system – the largest in the state – collectively enrolled 42,201 students in the fall of 2014, the IBHE reported. But at the start of the 2018-19 academic year, the number of full- and part-time students attending CCC classes declined to 33,852.

Malcolm X College was the only CCC campus that posted an enrollment increase over that time period, according to IBHE. Its enrollment grew 16 percent from 2014 through 2018.

The biggest enrollment drops took place at Harry S Truman College (down 73 percent), Olive-Harvey College (68 percent) and Kennedy-King College (63 percent), the figures show.

CCC is also facing a possible $17.4 million budget shortfall in 2021. The system, which employs more than 4,000 faculty and staff members at the seven campuses and five satellite centers, is considering a 3 percent annual tuition increase for each of the next four years, as well as increases in certain course fees. The plan was advanced by CCC’s Tuition Review Committee.

Such a tuition increase would cost students taking 12 credit hours an additional $228 per year by the 2023-24 academic year.
