Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on April 24.

To ensure that Illinois students have reliable access to a stable internet connection during the COVID-19 pandemic, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is encouraging families to use the recently released Wi-Fi Hotspot Map to find free wireless internet hotspot locations near them.

“It is absolutely essential that every family across Illinois has reliable access to the internet, especially during this pandemic, which has moved much of our daily activities into the digital sphere,” said Slaughter. “It’s not fair to ask a kid to do schoolwork online when they may not have reliable access to the internet.”

The Drive-Up Wi-Fi Hotspot Map is the result of a collaborative effort between several state agencies including the Illinois Higher Board of Education (IHBE), Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), and the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). The hotspot map was created primarily to help ensure students can complete online coursework, which typically includes video conferencing, online testing, research and assignments. Parents and guardians can drive their children to the Wi-Fi hotspots where they may use them for their schoolwork and other needs. “I am proud of the hard work being done by our state’s agencies and Governor Pritzker to help address the digital divide and its impact on our families during this time,” said Slaughter. “Ensuring that students across the state have access to the internet will help them succeed in their e-learning and other important activities.”
