Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on May 15.
To ensure our youth have a seat at the table, state Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is promoting the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Student Advisory Council for Illinois high school students during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.
“This pandemic has uprooted the lives of Illinois youth, and many teens are struggling with the new challenges in their educational pursuits,” said Slaughter. “ISBE’s Student Advisory Council will provide our community’s students with the opportunity to take part in education policymaking and have their voices heard.”
Slaughter is encouraging students to apply for a spot on the ISBE Student Advisory Council. The council will be composed of a diverse group of motivated and engaged high school students from across the state who act as student advisers to the State Board. Students will have the opportunity to see the ISBE’s policymakers in action and work with them to provide student perspectives and concerns on the state’s education policies. The deadline for the application is May 29.
“As we look to get Illinois back on track, it’s imperative that we include young people’s perspectives on the issues that will shape their futures,” Slaughter said. “Now more than ever, we need to work together to ensure young people have a seat at the table.”
