Gov. J.B. Pritzker has signed a bill that allows bars and restaurants to sell alcohol in to-go containers.
Pritzker said during one of his daily COVID-19 press briefings last week that he would sign the bill that was passed by both the House and the Senate earlier last week, NBC 5 reported. Pritzker signed it into law yesterday, the station reported.
While third-parties like Door Dash or GrubHub cannot deliver alcoholic beverages, customers can get them via pickup at restaurants or delivered by the restaurants themselves, according to the news agency.
The bill will only be effective for one year and the to-go containers must be tamper-proof. The news agency noted that city officials in Chicago are trying to figure out how to implement the bill within city limits.
The bill also extends liquor licenses for 120 days and delay license fees for six months. Municipalities are also allowed to opt-out of the law if they choose, the news agency reported.
