Illinois State House District 35 issued the following announcement on June 8.
Continuing her commitment to first responders across Illinois, state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, recently passed new protections for police and firefighters who have contracted COVID-19.
“Police, firefighters and other first responders put their lives on the line every single day to protect our communities, even more so now as they work on the frontlines in the fight against COVID-19,” said Hurley. “First responders deserve our utmost respect, support and protection both during everyday life and especially during this unprecedented time.”
Hurley passed House Bill 2455, which expands workers compensation benefits for first responders who have lost their lives in the line of duty to include all those who have contracted COVID-19. Hurley’s bill passed the legislature with unanimous bipartisan support and now heads to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.
“It is critical to expand our support for first responders as they continue their fight against COVID-19 and work in dangerous conditions to keep our neighborhoods safe and limit the spread of this virus,” continued Hurley. “I urge the governor to sign this legislation into law immediately to show Illinois’ support for the men and women who put their safety on the
