ANN & ROBERT H. LURIE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF CHICAGO: What to Expect During A Telemedicine Visit

Virtualcare

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago issued the following announcement on June 26.

Now, more than ever, our team of experts are here for you and continue to provide the care you need, both in-person and by video. Our telemedicine team is now offering virtual outpatient appointments. A video visit lets your family connect with your child's care team within minutes from the comfort of your home.

“Lurie Children’s has been offering Telemedicine services for over 5 years, allowing us to connect our expert teams with children and their families around the world,” says Dana Schinasi, MD, Medical Director for Telehealth Programs. “ All of our providers have been trained in providing care through Telemedicine, using a secure, private, HIPAA-compliant system. Our goal has always been to bring our teams to you, wherever you are located, whenever it is needed most.”

If you have an upcoming video appointment or are looking to learn more, below we answer common questions to help you get the most out of your virtual visit!

What should I do before our visit?

Once your appointment is confirmed, you will receive an email with instructions on how to download a free, secure telemedicine app to your mobile device. You can also access our providers on your tablet or computer - whatever works best and allows you to have a camera. Connecting to WiFi is preferred!

Find a private, well-lit spot for your visit. Find a quiet spot in your home with good lighting (avoid sitting with a window behind you!) that will be comfortable for your child and allow you to have privacy.

Write down your questions! As you would before an in-person visit, we recommend taking a moment to jot down a list of two or three questions you want to address so that you won't forget anything important.

Send any necessary documents to your care team. If you have any documents or records to share with the healthcare team, please send it ahead of time. This will help keep your appointment focused on your questions!

Need language interpreting services? Let your healthcare team know and we will coordinate ahead of your visit!

Day of appointment checklist

Set up your space. It's hard to hold a camera completely steady, so try not to hold your camera if you can help it. You can stack books on a flat surface and lean your phone against a paperweight, place your laptop on a stack of books or get creative!

Be prepared! Have your list of questions on hand, and a pen and paper to write down any notes or next steps. If necessary, have any medications with you during the visit and note any that need refills.

Check-in at least 10 minutes before your appointment. If your healthcare team is running late, please wait for them to join. Call the office if the wait becomes too long or you need to reschedule.

Launch the app. You will have received an email with instructions on how to start your video visit. If you get disconnected, restart the visit by clicking on the link in the email.

As the visit comes to an end, ask your care team when and how you should follow-up!
