A health care company has partnered with the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago and several others to create a program to create and distribute masks.

Medline, Knowality, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois are going to distribute the masks in the "Wash and Wear Community Mask Project" to those in underserved Chicago neighborhoods.

"Social determinants of health such as race and income impact health outcomes - this is true here in Chicago, where COVID-19 case rates have been higher in minority, low-income areas," Karen Frey, Medline's senior philanthropy manager, said. "Through this initiative, we continue our fight for health equity."

The groups will give away 100,000 reusable facemasks. Currently, Illinois residents are required to wear masks in public, but underserved communities don't always have access to personal protective equipment.

The reusable masks can be laundered up to 25 times and are made from the same material has medical scrubs.
