Illinois State House District 27 issued the following announcement on July 2.
State Rep. Justin Slaughter, D-Chicago, is highlighting a new economic recovery plan that will provide $25 million to businesses that suffered damages due to the civil unrest following the death of George Floyd.
“Although many of our businesses were ravaged during the civil unrest that occurred in response to the death of George Floyd, I know that we are resilient, and we will rebuild,” said Slaughter. “I will continue to work closely with Governor Pritzker, the General Assembly and local elected officials to make sure that the businesses in our community get the resources they need.”
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) recently announced the creation of the Rebuild Distressed Communities program, which will provide support for businesses that sustained property damage during recent protests and demonstrations following the murder of George Floyd. The program will prioritize small businesses, minority and women-owned businesses, businesses that are uninsured or underinsured, businesses that have a high community impact such as grocery stores, and businesses that are located in historically underserved communities. “Our community has continued to persevere despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and I know that we will continue to become stronger,” said Slaughter. “The only way that we will make it through these uncertain times is through working together and supporting each other, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to ensure that our community has the support it needs.
