Krupa fumes at governor's school sports shutdown: 'He has crossed the bounds of what should be his power'

Former Chicago alderman candidate David Krupa rages Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s fall sports ban on high school student athletes simply ranks as his latest abuse of power.

“Everyone acknowledges he has crossed the bounds of what should be his power,” Krupa told Chicago City Wire. “People have really grown tired of the restraints being placed on them that are coming at his whim. I’m not surprised to see them finally standing up to him.”

Pritzker recently doubled down on his decision to keep most student-athletes off the field over COVID-19 concerns, sparking protests from parents, students and coaches all across the state. The Illinois High School Association fired off a letter to Pritzker requesting that they be allowed “to resume control over determining the resumption of sports and activities.” Currently, the two sides are allowing teams across the state to practice this month under specific COVID-19 guidelines.

“The governor will have you believe being in high school serves as some start of breeding ground for COVID-19,” Krupa added. “I think you’ll see the protests continue and maybe even grow to be much larger. This should be a decision that’s left to families and students as they analyze their own situations.”

In Krupa’s mind, there’s little about what might be fueling many of the governor’s most demonstrative actions

“It’s all about politics,” he said. “I really believe that, so much so that I think a lot of what you’re seeing every day with COVID will be completely gone after (Election Day) Nov. 3. There’s no question it’s a real disease, but there has just been so much government overreach. We’re treating this as an all-or-nothing proposition and that shouldn’t be the case.”
