Historian Waddy: Cuomo sex allegations getting more attention than nursing home scandal

In the mind of SUNY Alfred history professor Nicholas Waddy, the verdict is already in when it comes to the growing sex abuse scandal swirling around New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

“There’s not going to be any clear resolution to this case,” Waddy said during a recent appearance on Chicago’s Morning Answer.

Though hardly a Cuomo fan, Waddy admits that’s a verdict he could come to live with, at least over the short term.

“I’m a conservative and a Republican and the truth is the GOP is on life support in New York and we need a train wreck of a governor like Cuomo to breathe new life into the party and give us an outside chance,” he said. “The truth is, the people of New York chose Cuomo. He was a terrible choice, a terrible governor and a terrible man, but we should have to live with our choice unless he’s committed high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Waddy argues that more people are now talking about the sex allegations against Cuomo than the nursing home and COVID-19 scandal Cuomo also sits at the center of. Waddy says this proves he may already be getting off easier than he should be.

“A lot of people regard that as the more serious potential crime,” he said. “I think some of us are skeptical about the possible misdirection. If Democrats in New York and nationally had to deal with the nursing home issue, a lot of Democrats would be on the hot seat. By destroying Cuomo on this rather nebulous issue, Democrats may be able to avoid the nursing home issue.”
