DePaul's spring break road trip to California got off to a tough start on Tuesday.
After splitting the first two doubles matches with Tripp Tuff and Matteo Iaquinto winning at the No. 3 position, Vito Tonejc and Marino Jakic came within three match points of clinching the doubles point only to come up short 7-6(8).
Loyola Marymount (4-10) which has played eight nationally ranked teams in the dual-match season won the first five singles matches.
The Blue Demons' best, reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week Vito Tonejc, came through with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over the Lions' No. 1 singles player John Otico.
That was Tonejc's 13th win in 14 dual matches. The junior from Zagreb, Croatia opened the dual season with a 10-match winning streak, stumbled once and has now won three in a row.
The five-day road swing through California continues Wednesday at UC Irvine which is 9-4 with all its losses coming to nationally ranked opponents.
