Mayor Lori Lightfoot welcomed Chicago Public Schools students back to school with a series of tweets

“Welcome back to school, @ChiPubSchools students! We are here to support you on your academic journey and help you reach your fullest potential. Let's make this a great year. #FirstDayCPS”

In a tweet before the first day of school, Lightfoot posted, "Back to school time, Chicago! Hope you’re ready for another year of learning, growth, and achievement. See you tomorrow bright and early"

In 2019, 14% of black students in 11th grade in Chicago Public Schools (CPS) could read at grade level, Wirepoints reported. 25% of Hispanic CPS 11th graders could read at grade level. Wirepoints noted that that data is from before the pandemic, during which school closures negatively impacted students' levels of academic achievement. CPS teachers are among the highest paid in the country.

According to test scores from the most recent Illinois Assessment of Readiness, less than 20% of Chicago third graders can read or do math at grade level proficiency, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
