Candidate Chuy Garcia has vowed to replace the current Chicago Police Supt. David Brown if elected mayor.
According to CBS Chicago News, Garcia recently unveiled his plan for improving public safety in the city, which centers on replacing Supt. David Brown as Police Supt.
"[Brown] is not trusted by his officers or by the public. He will be replaced with a leader who shares my vision of modern policing," Garcia said, according to CBS. "The new superintendent of police must be a leader who inspires the rank and file, understands modern policing strategies, can lead a cultural and professional transformation, is eager to build trust with our communities, and who understands our city."
Garcia has been adamant about his intention to replace Brown, a transplant from Dallas, with someone from Chicago, preferably someone already in CPD leadership as part of an overall plan to shift officers from citywide units to a centralized unit.
The mayoral candidate also went on record with his plan to replace officers conducting administrative duties with civilians to get more officers back out in the field.
Garcia said the city's crime problems have been a long time coming, adding "the city will not be made safer overnight, but there is work that can and should be done immediately, and if we unite around a set of evidence-informed and promising strategies, we can make demonstrable and lasting progress," according to CBS News.
