Cougars Men’s Basketball Earns Third Consecutive Win With 62-49 Win at Hartford

Box Score It was a tale of two halves as Chicago State earned a 62-49 road win at Hartford Saturday afternoon at Chase Arena in West Hartford, Connecticut. The Cougars went on an early 13-0 run and cruised to a 30-15 halftime lead but Hartford responded in the second half with a 17-5 run to trail by just three before CSU staged another late run to pull out the 13-point win. It was Chicago State's third consecutive victory and fourth in the their last five games and first three-game win streak since 2018-19.

The Cougars had a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures and eight contributing points. Wesley Cardet led all scorers with 13 points, he was followed by Bryce Johnson who had 12, Jahsean Corbett with 11 and Elijah Weaver with 10. Corbett led all players with 11 rebounds as he notched his ninth double-double of the season.

The next action for Chicago State's men's basketball team will be Tuesday, February 7 at 6 p.m. against the Delaware State Hornets at Bayhealth Court at Memorial Hall in Dover, Delaware. The Hornets enter today's play with a 4-16 record with a 2-4 mark at home.

1st Half - Chicago State 30, Hartford 15
Jahsean Corbett opened the scoring in the game with a layup on the the Cougars first possession
Hartford answered with a three for a brief 3-2 lead before Chicago State went on a 13-0 run to turn the one-point deficit into a 15-3 lead at the 11:19 mark
Both teams were cold from beyond the three-point line in the first half, Chicago State hitting just 2-of-11 threes while Hartford went 1-of-11
Both teams also struggled with turnovers as the Hawks turned it over 10 times and the Cougars 8
Chicago State still managed to shoot 42 percent from the field despite the struggle for distance and out rebounded the Hawks by 10, 23-13 including an 8-4 advantage on the offensive end
After not getting any bench points in the win at The Citadel, eight Cougars scored in the first half and no player had more than six points (Wesley Cardet) in a balance scoring attack

2nd Half - Hartford 34, Chicago State 32
Hartford opened the second-half scoring with a layup and Brent Davis answered with a three for Chicago State
The Hawks then hit their second three of the game which sparked a 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, 33-24, with 16:57 remaining
Elijah Weaver stopped the run with a layup before Hartford hit threes on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to five, 35-30
A pair of Hawks free throws moved Hartford to within three, 35-32 at the 13:16 mark and a 17-5 Hawks run overall
The teams exchanged a free throw apiece before Jahsean Corbett hit a three for CSU and the Hawks answered with a dunk
Elijah Weaver then a three for Chicago State but Hartford scored again and the CSU lead was 42-37 at the 9:06 mark
The Cougars then went on a modest 5-0 run on a Bryce Johnson layup, free throw and Jahsean Corbett layup and CSU was up 10, 47-37, with 7:03 left to play
The Hawks pulled to within six with 4:56 remaining to play, 49-43, but wouldn't get any closer as CSU extended the lead to as many as 12 in the final two minutes and held on for the 13-point win
