New poll shows Chicago mayoral race heating up

Paul vallas and brandon johnson

Dan Proft, host of radio show Chicago's Morning Answer, is anticipating the upcoming mayoral runoff election between candidates Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas.

"We ended the show yesterday, appropriately so, as predicted, with her (Lori Lightfoot's) political epitaph and what it should be and we begin the show today with her concession speech and, of course, the anticipated (at least here on this show since we know what we're talking about) the anticipated matchup in the runoff of Paul Vallas versus Lets Go Brandon," Proft said.

A new poll indicates that the upcoming race for the Chicago's mayor office is heating up, a recent WLS report said. With the mayoral runoff election just over three weeks away, candidate Johnson is on the campaign trail.

"Brandon Johnson is the only mayoral candidate committed to working with us to make our community safer," 17th District Police Councilor Anthony Tamez told WLS.

The Illinois Nurses Association also voiced their support for Johnson and his vision to invest in affordable health care and mental health resources.

"Brandon Johnson is the person who can help fix this issue, get Chicagoans the mental health care that they need," Paul Pater, chair of the Illinois Nurses Association PAC, told WLS.

Although Vallas has not made any public appearances, his platform released a TV ad claiming that Johnson wants to defund the police and raise taxes, WLS said. Ray Lopez, 15th Ward alderman, also endorsed Vallas, saying, "I look forward to working with Paul Vallas."

During their first debate earlier this month, Vallas criticized his opponent for attempting to divert attention from the issues.

"He wants to make it about issues other than the issues," Vallas said, quoted by WLS. "So I'm gonna continue to focus on public safety, on quality schools, on transforming budgets into real community investment vehicles."

Vallas, the former head of Chicago Public Schools, has endorsements from the Fraternal Order of Police and former mayoral candidate Willie Wilson. Both candidates continue to gain endorsements as the April 4 election draws closer.
