The American flag returned to the backdrop of Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's news conference on Wednesday, three days after City Wire reported the city's Socialist boss had stopped displaying Stars and Stripes during media appearances and social media videos.
In recent weeks, Johnson's administration replaced the American flag in favor of a second Chicago flag without explaining the move publicly.
Displaying the American flag at news conferences is a longstanding mayoral tradition. Johnson's administration has not explained the decision to remove the American flag from appearance backgrounds staged by his staff.
The American flag made a comeback at City Hall Tuesday news conference that lasted an hour and covered several topics, including how Johnson plans to deal with the crisis-level number of migrants currently living in city police stations, picking a new police superintendent and trying to keep the Bears in town, among other things.
Johnson dodged several questions by saying he won't be rushed to make decisions by reporters.
On the night of July 31, hours after the City Wire story was published, Johnson's official Facebook page changed its cover photo to a picture that showed the American flag in the background of an image of the mayor with a group of young people that first appeared on his Instagram page on July 25.
