A Cook County Jail inmate, Johnny Hendrix, who was beaten to death by another inmate had a history of arrests for violent behavior.
The incident in which Hendrix was killed occurred at Cermak Hospital within the jail, prompted the immediate intervention from security personnel and medical staff, resulting in the death of Hendrix, a 29-year-old Rockford resident.
The Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force is conducting an investigation into the incident, but as of now, no charges have been filed.
Hendrix was being held in the Cook County jail after being arrested by the Lynwood Police on outstanding warrants and a criminal trespassing charge.
Hendrix himself was arrested in 2021 along with another violent offender, Jamain B. Craft, for holding down a victim while his partner in crime bludgeoned him in the head, according to the Northwest Herald.
In the incident Hendrix and the other aggressor were charged with aggravated battery in a public place.
The victim was attacked by Hendrix after they got into a verbal altercation with a good samaritan who asked them to stop verbally harassing two juvenile females.
He was released held on a $15,000 bail in that incident and faced up to five years in jail.
Craft, Hendrix’s criminal partner, in that incident, was convicted to five years in jail for that incident and several others in which he engaged in violent behavior. Prior to the beating Craft had served 18 months in jail for another violent offense.
In 2019, Hendrix was arrested by Chicago Police for battery and causing bodily harm.
Hendrix was also arrested by Chicago Police in 2015 on a warrant charge.
