The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that the installation of a new overhead sign structure on the inbound Kennedy Expressway (Interstate 90/94), between Grand Avenue and Ohio Street in Chicago, will necessitate lane closures over four extended weekends. This marks the second of four planned weekend closures. Major travel delays are anticipated, and alternative routes are strongly encouraged.

Starting at 10 p.m. Friday, May 31, weather permitting, until 5 a.m. Monday, June 3, an additional left lane will be closed on the inbound Kennedy between Milwaukee Avenue and Hubbard’s Cave.

Currently, the left lane on the inbound Kennedy from Chicago Avenue to Lake Street and on the outbound Kennedy from the Jane Byrne Interchange to Grand Avenue is closed to accommodate painting and LED lighting installation at Hubbard’s Cave. The westbound Randolph Street ramp to the outbound Kennedy is also closed and is expected to reopen later this fall.

To complete the work, two additional weekend lane closures will be required from 10 p.m. Fridays to 5 a.m. Mondays, as weather permits and announced in advance.

Motorists should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in work zones, obey posted speed limits, slow down, and be alert for workers and equipment. Traveling during non-peak hours and utilizing mass transit – particularly Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line, Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, and Pace – is recommended throughout the duration of the project if possible.
