Public – Debra Corwin
II. Public Comments
Debra Corwin outlined her background and interest in applying for Historic Commission membership. Her work with non-profits, her marketing experience, and her current volunteer work with Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley will all be of value to our activities and mission.
III. Approval of June Meeting Minutes
Approved on a motion by Syed, seconded by Bob, and passed unanimously.
IV. Treasurer Report: No new expenditures.
V. New Business
A. Discussion of 831 N Washington (DeCarlo-Ferguson home)
We discussed the revised Historic Register application and research that was submitted for this home. The application made in April 2021 had been withdrawn because of uncertainty about the construction date. New facts in the revised application indicate the home was built in the 1800’s in Wayne and moved to Wheaton in 1908, onto land purchased by Henry Allen Smith in 1892 . This information corrected the signage from when the owners bought the house indicating it was built in 1876 and moved to Wheaton from Wayne in 1904. A vote to approve will be taken at the September meeting.
B. September 7 French Market
● Reprinting of promo fliers. Drafts of two brochures—one describing the Historic Commission and one about the Historic Site Markers—were discussed. The three missing markers at Memorial Park were noted; these will be omitted from the updated brochure. Louise will pass along the suggestions and revisions to Halie Cardinal, Communications Dept, for final production.
● Staffing/Setup. Bob reiterated the requirement to arrive with table, chairs, and materials between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM. Louise will contact Sandy prior to the market to confirm our participation.
● Promotion of October 23 Cemeteries of Wheaton lecture at the Library. Louise will ask Communications Dept. for a flyer to be used not only at the French Market but also for other publicity efforts.
C. Text for new web page “Researching Your Home” This has been completed and will now be passed along to Susan Bischoff for placement on the website.
VI. Updates
A. Walking Tour of Main Street. Discussion will continue at the September meeting.
B. Red Grange historical marker. Delayed until other projects are completed, including restoring the markers that are missing.
C. Commission Handbook ongoing development. This work is in progress.
VII. Commissioner Comments
Louise—Whittier School upcoming 100th anniversary. Hoping to get more info regarding architect, history, photos. Also, the contractor responsible for the Sandberg building renovations, including removing cedar shakes, could be a candidate for the new “Preservation Awards” that we discussed at an earlier meeting.
Mike—The November 7 Geoffrey Baer appearance at DuPage Historical Museum represents a potential publicity opportunity for the Historic Commission; we should pursue a presence there.
Nancy—Following Joe’s departure, we need to have a commission member also be a member of the Downtown Design & Review Board.
VIII. Adjournment. Bob moved to adjourn, Syed seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The meeting concluded at 8:37 pm.
