Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed Executive Order 2024-2 to create a Transfemicide Working Group aimed at addressing violence against transgender women in Chicago. This initiative is part of the administration's strategy to tackle the root causes of violence and enhance community safety.
The Mayor emphasized, "As transgender women continue to experience violence in our city at disproportionate rates, my administration is committed to uplifting our trans community and ensuring their safety." He added that the working group would collaborate with community advocates and leaders for solutions.
The city faces significant challenges as it has become one of the deadliest places for Black trans women. The working group aims to provide support for organizations already engaged in this work and develop comprehensive solutions.
The Executive Order mandates that by February 28, 2025, the Commissioner of the Chicago Commission on Human Relations, alongside the Chicago Police Department, will form a working group. This group will include representatives from various city departments to review and recommend policies affecting BIPOC transgender and gender-diverse communities.
Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa expressed gratitude towards Mayor Johnson’s efforts: “We are sincerely grateful to Mayor Johnson’s Administration for the commitment to establish the Transfemicide Working Group through an official Executive Order 2024-2.”
Partnerships involving several city departments, including Human Relations, Police, Family Support Services, and Public Health, aim to bolster community safety efforts focused on protecting vulnerable groups.
