Chicago Fire FC has announced the acquisition of Portuguese defender Leonardo Barroso from Sporting CP B. The 19-year-old will join as a U22 initiative signing and occupy an international roster spot. His contract is set to last until the end of the 2028 season, with an option for 2029.

“We're very pleased to welcome Leonardo to the Fire. He’s coming from an elite environment at Sporting, where he worked closely with Filipe Celikkaya, who recently joined us as an assistant coach,” said Chicago Fire FC Director of Football and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. “We believe that Leonardo has a very high ceiling, and we’re confident he will make an immediate impact. His skill set and mentality align well with our vision, and we’re excited to see how he contributes to the future success of the Club.”

Barroso has spent two seasons with Sporting CP B in Lisbon, participating in 27 matches. Recently, he played in the Premier League International Cup against Atlético CP, Southampton, and Brighton & Hove Albion. Barroso joined Sporting CP in 2018 from SL Benfica Academy at the U-15 level.

“I’m very happy to join the Chicago Fire,” said Barroso. “The Club has ambitious goals and a very clear plan for 2025 and beyond. I’m ready to contribute and give my best on and off the field to help us succeed.”

Internationally, Barroso has been part of Portugal's youth teams from U-15 through U-20 levels. He played every minute during Portugal's run to the semifinals in the 2022 UEFA Under-17 Euros before losing on penalties to France. Additionally, he scored for Portugal's U-20 team against Poland in a European Elite League match.
