Brian Gutiérrez, a promising midfielder from Chicago Fire FC, has earned his first call-up to the senior U.S. Men's National Team (USMNT). Gutiérrez, who joined the Chicago Fire Academy at 16 and became a Homegrown signing in 2020, has been involved with United States Youth National Teams since 2017. He was recently named to the 2024 MLS 22 Under 22 class for the second year in a row.
On January 6, USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino included Gutiérrez among the 24 players called into the team's January camp. This marks an important milestone for Gutiérrez as he joins six other players receiving their first senior team call-up. "I was really excited, really happy," said Gutiérrez during a press conference at the camp.
Gregg Berhalter, Director of Football and Head Coach at Chicago Fire FC, acknowledged the significance of this opportunity for Gutiérrez. "This is an opportunity to really put his mark on the program," Berhalter stated. He encouraged Gutiérrez to enjoy his time at camp while learning from experienced coaches like Pochettino.
Gutiérrez expressed appreciation for Pochettino's coaching style: "I think he's making us better every day... we need to be bringing that intensity." The bilingual player also values being able to communicate with Pochettino in both English and Spanish.
Looking ahead, Gutiérrez aims to make an impact on the national team. "When you're at camp, showing your best ability... that's how you get looked at," he explained.
The USMNT will start its 2025 schedule against Venezuela on January 18 at Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale and then face Costa Rica on January 22 in Orlando.
