Chicago Fire FC II has announced the acquisition of midfielder Sam Williams. The 19-year-old's contract will extend through 2025, with an option for the club to extend it to 2026. Financial details of the agreement have not been disclosed.
"We’re focused on developing talented players and professionals who embody the values of the Club," stated Chicago Fire FC Sporting Director Gregg Broughton. "Sam is a great fit for the culture we’re building, and his versatility and experience make him an ideal addition to our squad. We’re excited to help him take the next step in his career with us."
Williams began his soccer journey at New York Red Bulls Academy, where he was notable for being the first Academy graduate to reach 2,000 minutes during the 2022 USL Championship regular season with New York Red Bulls II. Afterward, he joined North Carolina’s Men’s Soccer program and earned accolades such as being named to both the All-ACC Freshman and All-ACC Academic Teams in 2022.
"We have been tracking Sam since his first season in college and have been impressed with his growth both on and off the field," commented Chicago Fire FC General Manager Alex Boler. "He’s at a very good age, with the potential to be a highly successful player in our environment. He is a hard-working, versatile player, and we think being in a professional environment year-round will help his trajectory right away."
Williams also earned recognition from national teams when he received a call-up to the U.S. U-19 Men’s Youth National Team January training camp in 2023, one of only two college soccer players invited at that time. He followed this by starting all 22 games for North Carolina during their NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals run.
The official transaction confirms that Chicago Fire FC II has acquired Sam Williams under an MLS NEXT Pro contract valid through 2025.
