Chicago Fire FC faced a 1-0 defeat against Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in their opening match of the Coachella Valley Invitational. The game took place at the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California. LAFC's forward Denis Bouanga scored the only goal of the match through a penalty kick, overcoming Chicago's strong defensive efforts.

Jeff Gal, starting as goalkeeper for Chicago Fire FC, made notable saves early in the match. In the 17th minute, he successfully tackled LAFC midfielder Timmy Tillman to prevent an early goal. Later in the first half, Gal thwarted another attempt by LAFC forward David Martinez with a crucial save that led to a corner kick.

The second half saw Chicago gaining more possession and creating chances. However, it was LAFC who scored first when Jeremy Ebobisse drew a foul inside the box shortly after substituting Olivier Giroud in the 63rd minute. Bouanga converted the subsequent penalty into what would be the decisive goal.

Patrick Los and other players from Chicago Fire Academy joined during the second half, maintaining pressure on LAFC's attack but failing to secure an equalizer before full time.
