Three men involved in a series of carjackings and armed robberies in Chicago have been sentenced to federal prison. The incidents included a carjacking with an infant present and the assault of a convenience store clerk.
Damandre Henley, Dwight Hasberry, Tyler Oates-Nelson, and Davario McDowell were responsible for these crimes, which occurred overnight on September 28 and 29, 2022. All four defendants pleaded guilty to charges of federal carjacking, armed robbery, and firearm offenses last year.
U.S. District Judge Manish Shah handed down the sentences. Tyler Oates-Nelson, aged 29 from Chicago, received a 15-year sentence on Thursday. Davario McDowell, aged 25 from Chicago, was sentenced to 18 years on Wednesday. Damandre Henley, aged 28 from Chicago, was given a 22-year sentence on February 11, 2025. Dwight Hasberry's sentencing is scheduled for March 20, 2025.
The crime spree began with four carjackings early on September 28. That evening, the group targeted a Volkswagen Tiguan in West Town while an infant was inside. After arriving in Oates-Nelson's vehicle, Henley, Hasberry, and McDowell threatened the driver at gunpoint before stealing the vehicle once the infant was safely removed.
Later that night in Ravenswood Manor neighborhood, they robbed two individuals at gunpoint and proceeded to rob a nearby convenience store. During this robbery at a 7-Eleven store, Henley struck a clerk with his gun while demanding access to the cash register.
The sentences were announced by Morris Pasqual of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois; Douglas S. DePodesta of the FBI's Chicago Field Office; and Larry Snelling of the Chicago Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elie Zenner represented the government in this case.
