The Chicago Hounds faced a challenging game against the Utah Warriors in their 2025 home opener, ultimately falling 45-31. The match saw the Hounds attempting to recover from an early 14-0 deficit, but they were unable to overcome the Warriors' offensive strength. This loss brings Chicago's season record to 1-1 as they prepare for their next match against the New England Free Jacks.

Despite the defeat, there was a milestone celebration for hooker Dylan Fawsitt, who played his 100th Major League Rugby (MLR) game and scored his second try of the season. Other contributors for the Hounds included flanker Mason Flesch, left wing Nate Augspurger, and scrumhalf Mitch Short with tries, while flyhalf Adriaan Carelse was successful with three conversions and a penalty kick.

The Warriors started strong with hooker Liam Coltman scoring early on. Flyhalf DeAngelo Leuila added to Utah's lead with successful conversion kicks throughout the game. By seven minutes into the match, Utah led 14-0 after wing Blake Makiri's try.

Nate Augspurger initiated a comeback attempt for Chicago with a seven-point try. However, Utah responded quickly with Joe Mano scoring off a cross-field kick, extending their lead further. The Hounds narrowed the gap before halftime with tries from Mason Flesch and Dylan Fawsitt.

In the second half, Mitch Short gave Chicago its first lead of the day with a try converted by Carelse. However, momentum shifted when tighthead prop Charlie Abel received a red card for a dangerous tackle around the 50th minute.

Utah capitalized on this advantage as Matt Jensen and Spencer Jones scored tries in quick succession. Despite efforts from Chicago to close the gap with another penalty kick by Carelse, Utah maintained control. Joe Mano sealed Utah's victory with his second try late in the game.

Chicago managed to earn one bonus point by scoring four or more tries but missed out on a losing bonus point due to not keeping within seven points of Utah's scoreline.

Looking ahead, Chicago will face reigning champions New England Free Jacks at SeatGeek Stadium next Sunday at 1 PM. Tickets are available for fans interested in attending this pivotal early-season matchup.
