Chicago Fire FC secured a 2-1 victory against Toronto FC at BMO Field, marking their second consecutive comeback win on the road. Andrew Gutman scored his second goal of the season for Chicago, while Hugo Cuypers netted the game-winner with his fourth strike in 2025.
Toronto began their home opener with intensity and found success early when Jonathan Osorio's pass to Federico Bernardeschi set up Deandre Kerr for an 11th-minute header. Chicago responded swiftly; Sergio Oregel, Jr.'s shot hit the post before Jonathan Bamba set up Gutman to equalize in the 30th minute.
Cuypers' decisive goal came just before halftime after he connected with Leonardo Barroso. Despite efforts from Toronto in the second half, including a disallowed goal following a foul review, Chicago maintained their lead.
"Forward Hugo Cuypers’ 44th-minute strike was his fourth goal in three matches," noted team sources. Defender Andrew Gutman's performance also stood out as it was "the first time since August 2022 that he scored in consecutive matches."
The match featured five Chicago Fire Academy graduates, setting a new club record for most academy players starting simultaneously. Maren Haile-Selassie made his first appearance of 2025 during this match.
Looking ahead, Chicago will conclude their road stretch facing Vancouver Whitecaps FC on March 22 at BC Place.
