Chicago Fire FC has announced the signing of defender Diego Konincks from its affiliate team, Chicago Fire FC II, on a short-term agreement. This agreement allows Konincks to join the squad for today's Major League Soccer match against CF Montréal at Soldier Field.
Konincks, 24, was on the bench during Chicago's recent victory over Vancouver Whitecaps FC. He participated in the second leg of the team's preseason, facing LAFC, Portland Timbers, and San Jose Earthquakes during the Coachella Valley Invitational. He also played in a closed-door scrimmage against Las Vegas Lights FC.
Named captain for Chicago Fire II's 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season, Konincks has already completed two full matches this year. Last season, he played all 24 matches he started in MLS NEXT Pro and scored twice as a centerback. He took part in three Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup matches and had four short-term agreements with Chicago Fire in 2024.
This marks Konincks' second short-term contract of the current season. MLS rules allow clubs to sign players from affiliates for up to four short-term agreements each season. These agreements can involve up to four-day contracts, totaling a maximum of 16 days. Players are permitted to be included in four MLS match rosters annually, but they can play in only two MLS matches, while non-league match appearances remain unrestricted under these agreements.
