Chicago joins 15 other Major League Soccer teams in this year's tournament, with the club returning after Chicago Fire II participated in 2024, reaching the Third Round before being defeated 1-0 by Indy Eleven.

Detroit City advanced to this stage after a 3-1 victory against USL League One side Westchester SC. Key performances from substitutes Jeciel Cedeno and Darren Smith were pivotal, with Cedeno scoring a penalty in the 85th minute and Smith adding another goal during stoppage time. Morey Doner and Juan Obregon also scored in the tightly contested match.

Chicago Fire has a storied history in the U.S. Open Cup, with four titles (1998, 2000, 2003, and 2006), the most by any MLS team. They also hold the record for the most wins and semifinal appearances by an MLS team in the competition.
