The City Council has approved the designation of the former WAX TRAX! Records building in Lincoln Park as an official Chicago landmark. This two-story, Renaissance Revival-style building is located at 2449 N. Lincoln Ave. and was originally constructed in the 1880s.
WAX TRAX! opened its doors in this location in 1978, quickly gaining a reputation as an international hub for diverse music genres such as punk, new wave, rockabilly, and dance. The store played a pivotal role in establishing Chicago's identity as the birthplace of industrial music by launching its own record label.
Before closing in 1993, WAX TRAX! offered more than just records; it also sold clothing, fanzines, concert tickets, and other items that made it a popular gathering spot for musicians and music enthusiasts alike.
The new landmark status will protect all exterior elevations of the historic building.
