The Sewer Fund, an enterprise fund dedicated to the operation, maintenance, and capital improvements of Chicago's sewer system, serves approximately 2.7 million residents across 230 square miles. The extensive sewer network comprises around 4,500 miles of sewers, 225,000 collection structures, and 148,000 manholes.
According to the financial performance report for 2024, gross operating revenues reached $397.5 million. This marks a 5.6% increase from the previous year, primarily attributed to a rate increase of 3.37% that took effect on June 1, 2024. Operating expenses before depreciation rose by 2.2% from the previous year to $156.3 million.
The net position of the Sewer Fund increased by $104 million over the prior year, reaching $1.12 billion in total. Additionally, utility plant additions amounted to $49.1 million in 2024 for necessary system upgrades.
Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the year stood at $183.3 million, up from $144.7 million in 2023.
