Chicago Fire FC faced a narrow 2-1 defeat against San Diego FC at Soldier Field on Saturday. Hugo Cuypers, Chicago's forward, scored his 12th goal of the season during this first-ever match between the two teams.
The opening goal came from San Diego when Luca Bombino crossed to Hirving Lozano, who assisted Anders Dreyer for the lead. Before halftime, Dreyer and Lozano combined again to double San Diego's advantage.
In the second half, Chicago created several opportunities. Midfielder Maren Haile-Selassie set up Cuypers for a late goal with four minutes left in regulation. Despite efforts in stoppage time, Chicago couldn't equalize.
Chicago will now play two away matches starting with Atlanta United on Wednesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium followed by CF Montréal at Stade Saputo on Saturday. Both matches will be available on MLS Season Pass and local broadcasts.
Notable performances included Hugo Cuypers' 12th season goal and Maren Haile-Selassie's fourth assist of the regular season. Goalkeeper Chris Brady returned to the starting lineup making two saves in his 79th career appearance. Rominigue Kouamé also played after a hiatus since June 7.
Several players were unavailable due to injuries or other reasons including Carlos Terán, Justin Reynolds, Christopher Cupps, Chris Mueller, and David Poreba.
Attendance for the match was reported at 27,631 with Victor Rivas officiating as referee supported by assistant referees Oscar Mitchell and Eduardo Jeff.
