On the 30th anniversary of the 1995 Chicago Heat Wave, Mayor Brandon Johnson and city officials are paying tribute to the over 700 individuals who lost their lives during the tragic event. Mayor Johnson, alongside various departments including the Department of Environment (DOE) and Department of Public Health (CDPH), participated in an event showcasing efforts to build heat resilience as part of the Defusing Disasters project.
Mayor Johnson emphasized that environmental crises involve equity, access, and justice, noting his administration's investment in climate action focused on at-risk communities. The commemoration took place at Columbus Park Refectory in Austin, chosen for its significance during the heat wave.
Angela Tovar, Chief Sustainability Officer and DOE Commissioner, highlighted community involvement as crucial in responding to extreme heat challenges. The city's Our Roots Chicago program is working to expand tree canopy coverage in underserved neighborhoods to mitigate severe weather impacts.
The Defusing Disasters project includes developing a Heat Vulnerability Index (HVI) to identify neighborhoods most susceptible to extreme heat. Jennifer Chan from Northwestern University noted that insights from HVI could shape policies for public safety.
Residents are encouraged to participate in a survey on policy recommendations related to extreme heat. On Thursday, Emilio Aguirre, a WWII U.S. Army veteran who died during the '95 heat wave, will be posthumously honored with full military honors. Aguirre’s story was brought to light by local historian Charles Henderson and MOVA Director Kevin Barszcz.
Kevin Barszcz stated that this tribute ensures no hero is forgotten. Thanks to collaborative efforts by city officials and other organizations, Aguirre's military service will be formally recognized with a ceremony scheduled for July 17th at Homewood Memorial Gardens.
