On September 24, 1931, in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S., Cardiss Hortense Collins was born, destined to become a trailblazer in Chicago's political landscape. After graduating from high school, she pursued higher education, earning a degree in education from Northwestern University. Collins's journey into politics began when she joined the staff of Congressman William L. Dawson, where she honed her skills and gained valuable experience in public service. In 1973, she made history by winning a special election to represent Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first African American woman from the state to do so.
