Jack Schaffer, born October 12, 1942 in Chicago

Leo Nomellini died October 17, 2000, connected to Chicago

Leo Nomellini died on October 17, 2000. He played 14 seasons with the San Francisco 49ers as both offensive and defensive tackle. He was selected six times to the All-NFL team and named to the NFL’s 50th Anniversary All-Time Team. He won seven tag team wrestling championships in different leagues. Born in Italy, Nomellini moved to Minnesota as an infant and later attended high school in Chicago. He started playing football in the Marine Corps during World War II. After the war, he played college football at the University of Minnesota, earning All-American honors. He was the 49ers' first pick in the 1950 NFL draft. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1977. Nomellini also wrestled professionally during the NFL off-seasons before retiring from wrestling in 1965.
