On August 2, 2025, St. Bernard Hospital held its 9th Annual Community Baby Shower in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. The event aimed to provide education, support, and essential baby items to expectant families in the area.

Danaya, a local resident attending for the first time, spoke about her experience. “Attending this event makes me want to do breastfeeding even more,” she said. She explained that she was initially hesitant about breastfeeding but gained confidence after learning from nurses about its nutritional and psychological benefits.

The baby shower was established to address challenges faced by mothers in the community, such as limited access to baby essentials and misinformation about infant care. St. Bernard Hospital, which has served Chicago for over 120 years as a safety-net facility, continues to focus on providing quality care regardless of patients’ ability to pay, with a focus on low-income and vulnerable populations.

As access to affordable healthcare becomes more difficult for families on Chicago’s South and West Sides, St. Bernard Hospital’s baby shower offers support by distributing items like diaper bags, strollers, and car seats. Attendees also receive information on topics such as breastfeeding, immunizations, postpartum depression, and safe sleep practices. Organizers emphasized that accurate information is essential for mothers as they make decisions for their children’s health and safety.

St. Bernard Hospital stated its ongoing commitment to supporting expectant mothers through free and accessible health education events. By removing financial barriers and connecting families directly with healthcare professionals, the hospital aims to ensure that community members receive vital knowledge and resources.

The hospital reiterated its dedication to serving Englewood and nearby communities by responding to their needs and providing care and support.
