The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued an arrest detainer for Leyter Jeferson Arauz-Medina, a Nicaraguan national accused of raping a 54-year-old woman in Chicago on August 31. The incident occurred after Arauz-Medina was released into the United States by the Biden Administration in September 2024.

An arrest detainer is a request to local authorities to inform ICE before releasing an individual, aiming to prevent further offenses. However, Chicago's status as a sanctuary city often results in such requests being ignored. Arauz-Medina faces charges including rape, sexual assault, assault, and drug possession. The attack reportedly involved dragging the victim into an alleyway and violently assaulting her until she lost consciousness. A passing motorist eventually interrupted the attack, causing Arauz-Medina to flee.

Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented on the situation: "A real-life nightmare: This criminal, who JB Pritzker continues to protect, VICIOUSLY ATTACKED an innocent woman who was walking the streets of Chicago." She criticized Governor Pritzker's sanctuary policies for protecting individuals like Arauz-Medina over citizens.

Arauz-Medina entered the U.S. near Eagle Pass, Texas on September 17, 2024. An immigration judge ordered his removal on July 17, 2025. Despite ongoing political challenges and sanctuary policies, ICE remains committed to removing violent criminals from communities under President Trump and Secretary Noem's leadership.
