Toddler Tale Storytimes: Stories, songs, and a craft around a new theme each week for ages five and under accompanied by parent or caregiver. 10:30 am, Tuesdays at the Rock Island 30/31 Library, Aug. 14, 21, 28; Wednesdays at the Rock Island Southwest Library, Aug. 8, 14, 22, 29; and Fridays at the Rock Island Downtown Library Children's Room, Aug. 10, 17, 24, 31. Free, no registration required.
Play & Grow, 10:30 am, Tuesday, August 7 at the Rock Island 30/31 Library. A time for tots to talk, sing, read, and play their way to early literacy. For ages three and under accompanied by parent or caregiver. Offered monthly at alternating library locations. Free, no registration required.
Hug-A-Book - CREATE. Thursday August 30, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Rock Island Downtown Library. Hug-A-Book is part of the Rock Island Public Library's early learning programming for ages two to 5, aimed at creating young readers. Join us for creative projects led by our very own Miss Ranell. Each child receives a free Hug-A-Book CREATE art apron and a free book to take home! For families with children ages two to five. Funding provided by the Merrill Harris Hug-A-Book Fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation. No registration required.
Activities for school age children, Grades K-6
Mr. Lemoncello's Library Scavenger Hunt, Tuesday, Aug. 28 and Wednesday, Aug. 29, 4:00 to7:00 pm, Rock Island Downtown Library Children's Room. It's author Chris Grabenstein's birthday, and we're celebrating with a drop-in scavenger hunt based on his popular Mr. Lemoncello's Library series. Recreate the wonders of Mr. Lemoncello's Library (now a Nickelodeon original movie) with your own search and find adventure. Drop in anytime during posted hours and pick up a game sheet to play. Return your completed game sheet to the Children's Room to receive a prize and an entry into our special prize drawing. All ages, families.
Bluestem Buddies Book Club, 1:00 pm, 2nd Saturday of each month, Rock Island Downtown Library Children's Room. Aug. 11, Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10, Dec. 8. Join us to read and discuss the Bluestem Illinois Children's Choice book nominees for grades 3-5. You'll get a chance to vote for your favorite in February! At our first meeting in August, we'll discuss a couple of short bios (don't worry, you don't have to read them beforehand,) talk about the Bluestem nominees, and provide the book selection list for the other book club meetings. School age, grades 3-5.
Activities for Pre-teens and Teens:
Anime Nights, for teens ages 12 to 18. Watch anime online, enjoy Japanese snacks and learn to write Japanese hiragana characters. Tuesday, Aug. 14, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, Rock Island Downtown Library. No registration required.
Teen and Tween Gaming Nights, Ages 8 to 18. Video and board gaming, on the library's Wii U, XBox 360, and Wii. Try games like Pokken Tournament, Rock Band, or some of our new strategy games. See if you'd survive a journey on the Oregon Trail, or challenge our gym in Pokemon Go. Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Rock Island Downtown Library.
