ILLINOIS STATE SENATE DISTRICT 11: Villanueva: survivors of domestic violence cannot be neglected

Meeting 08

Illinois State Senate District 11 issued the following announcement on April 9.

As hotlines for victims of domestic violence experience an increase in calls during the Executive Order to Stay Home, State Senator Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago) asked survivors to be aware of some options available for their Attention.

"In the midst of this crisis, we cannot leave anyone unattended," said Villanueva. "Survivors need a safety net during the Executive Order to Stay Home and our community must act and be there for them."

If you or someone you know suffers from domestic violence during the Executive Order to Stay Home, the National Helpline for Preventing Domestic Violence (1-800-799-7233) recommends developing a safety plan that includes travel restrictions and limited shelter options. A WGN report showed that the Illinois Domestic Violence Helpline (1-877-863-6338) is having a 40 percent increase in calls and that their shelters are at maximum capacity due to public health precautions. The helpline will continue to be free and available 24 hours a day during the COVID-19 crisis.
